While the United Arab Emirates (UAE) may be known for its looming skyscrapers and glamorous playgrounds, its quiet expansion into the international military stage belies the country’s impressive defensive capabilities.
The seven-state federation has shown its battle-hardened commitment to fortifying its military force, enjoying the second biggest defense budget, second only to Saudi Arabia. As a sector that can diversify the UAE’s oil-based economy, the domestic defense industry is expanding among the Gulf Arab States.
The UAE is expanding its own manufacturing capacity. In fact, it recently awarded NIMR Automotive with three new contracts. This will see the UAE armed forces receiving over 1,750 armored vehicles from the integrated defense manufacturing and services platform.
Within these contracts, NIMR will be delivering some of its most advanced vehicle platforms including the best-in-class JAIS family of vehicles.
As the relatively new standard for military armored vehicles, the JAIS represents the mine-resistant, ambush protected (MRAP) class of vehicles in the Gulf region. Named after the UAE’s Jebel Jais mountain range, the JAIS vehicles use battle-proven technologies, exceptional performance, and advanced crew protection to adapt to the asymmetrical nature of the modern battlefield.
This multi-role infantry vehicle, in both its 4×4 and 6×6 configurations, overshadows the conventional mine-resistant armored truck. Its ballistic protection provides superior crew protection and life-saving survivability. Crew survivability is centered around its battle-proven “crew citadel” protection system. This offers unparalleled protection against mines, IEDs, and ballistic threats.
The JAIS class of vehicles are composed of ballistic steel and feature a v-shaped mine protected hull. Both configurations feature bulletproof windows, providing protected situational awareness of the battlefield.
The highly protected JAIS provides exceptional protection for its personnel against the evolving nature of asymmetric warfare.
The JAIS’ proven mobility, delivered by its Caterpillar engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission delivers optimal mobility in some of the harshest operational environments. Its vehicle design ensures ease of maintenance. The engine is mounted on the left side of the hull rather than the front. This design offers simplified maintenance without sacrificing vehicle mobility performance.
The JAIS features modern suspension and powertrain, offering high power-to-weight ratio. Indeed, its double wishbone suspension offers high mobility in any terrain condition. Both the 4×4 and 6×6 configurations can reach a maximum speed of 105 km/h and a maximum cruising range of 600 km.
JAIS vehicles are integrated with central tyre inflation system (CTIS), run flat inserts (RFI). Its optional mobility features include a ride height adjustment system, situational awareness system, self-recovery winch, C4I command & control, and driver aids.
The modular design of JAIS vehicles means its multiple variants are designed to meet end-user requirements. Depending on the operational requirements, JAIS vehicles can be adapted to multiple platforms while sharing common parts and maintenance requirements.
In total, there are nearly 22 types of variants envisioned for JAIS vehicles. These modular designs include patrol, utility, reconnaissance, and specialty roles such as ambulance. Each modular design features a range of protection options and tactical mobility.
Its ability to adapt to the ever-evolving battlefield means it can meet the diverse range of operational requirements.
The battle-proven technologies found on the JAIS provides the UAE armed forces with mission-focused capabilities to adapt to non-conventional hostile confrontations.
Its architectural structure supports expansive tactical requirements to meet diverse mission demands. The increased payload capacity of the JAIS creates a platform where various weapons, mission equipment, and enhanced protection systems can be added. Both modular designs can be fitted with a remote-controlled weapon station complete with integrated electro-optical sights.
This enables multi-role application, making it the ideal choice for deployment in the unpredictable modern combat theatre.
While today’s battlefield poses a variety of challenges, the JAIS family of vehicles stand ready to meet them. They represent the evolution of the MRAP class of vehicles. Its flexibility to meet a diverse range of mission profiles coupled with its modular platform design makes it the ideal vehicle for any operation or threat.
